Jesus First

Two weeks ago the Chicago Bears won the central division and Luke Walter was so excited.  He could not wait to wear his Bears t-shirt to school the next day in support of his favorite team; I mean, for a Bears fan, this doesn’t happen often!  When the morning came and it was time to go out the door to school Lisa wanted Luke to put a sweatshirt on over his t-shirt…by all means it was cold outside!  Yet, Luke did not want anything covering over his Bears shirt!  How could his mother ask such a thing!?

This week we begin a series in Colossians title “Jesus First”.  As we look at our lives are we as adamant as Luke was to keep his Bears shirt uncovered to be sure nothing covers over our devotion to Jesus?

Jesus is above and over all. “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:17). Jesus is supreme over all creation (vv. 15-16). He is “the head of the body, the church” (v. 18). Because of this, He should have first place in all things.

Jesus deserves the best of our time, energy, and affection. When we give Jesus the highest place of honor in each area of our lives, this truth becomes visible to those around us. At work, are we laboring first for God or only to please our employer? (3:23). How do God’s standards show up in the way we treat others? (vv. 12-14). Do we put Him first as we live our lives and pursue our favorite pastimes?

When Jesus is our greatest influence in all of life, He will have His rightful place in our hearts.
